Grammatik-Guide 📝

The most important German grammar rules, clearly explained with examples.

Der / Die / Das
Die Fälle
Satzbau & V2
Trennbare Verben
Adjektiv-Endungen
💡 Golden Rule: Always learn the article WITH the noun — never "Tisch" alone, always "der Tisch". Use the character trick: 🦸 der = hero, 👸 die = princess, 👶 das = baby. ~80% of nouns follow the ending patterns below!
🦸
der
Maskulin
Endings: -er, -ling, -ig,
-ismus, -or, -ant,
-eur, -iker, -ist
der Freund, der König,
der Computer, der Humor
👸
die
Feminin
Endings: -ung, -keit,
-heit, -schaft, -ie,
-tät, -tion, -ik, -in
die Meinung, die Freiheit,
die Nation, die Musik
👶
das
Neutrum
Endings: -chen, -lein,
-ment, -tum, -um,
-nis, -sal, -tel
das Mädchen, das Moment,
das System, das Datum
⚡ Quick Memory Tricks
der — Days, months, seasons (der Montag, der Juni, der Sommer)
die — All -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft endings (100% rule!)
das — Diminutives -chen/-lein are ALWAYS neuter
🌍 Verbal nouns (das Lesen, das Schreiben) are always neuter

Aussprache-Labor 🔊

Master the sounds that trip up every learner. Click any word to hear it — then repeat out loud.

The CH Sound — Two Rules
German "ch" has two sounds — following a simple pattern. Mess this up and Germans notice immediately.
😮
ich-Laut /ç/ — after e, i, ä, ö, ü and consonants
Soft hissing sound at the front of the mouth. Like whispering "Hugh" — tongue almost touches the hard palate.
😤
ach-Laut /x/ — after a, o, u, au
Throaty, guttural sound at the back of the mouth. Like the Scottish "loch" or gentle throat-clearing.
Umlauts — ä, ö, ü
The two dots change the vowel completely. Get these right and Germans will be impressed.
🅰️
ä — like "e" in "bed"
Open your mouth as if saying "ah", but say "e". Like the "a" in "cat" (British English).
🅾️
ö — say "e" with rounded lips
Start saying "ee" (as in "see"), then round your lips into an "oo" shape without moving your tongue.
🆄
ü — say "ee" with rounded lips
Say "ee" (as in "see"), then round your lips as if saying "oo" — without moving your tongue.
The German R
Not rolled (Italian) or silent (French). Position in the word determines the sound.
🫧
Uvular R — start of syllable / before vowels
Back of throat — like very soft gargling. Think gargling water at the very back of your mouth.
🫦
Vocalic R — end of syllable / -er endings
At word end or in unstressed -er, sounds like a soft "ah". Not a full consonant — like the British "a" in "better".
Critical Spelling Rules
Two rules that instantly reveal whether someone knows German pronunciation.
👁️
IE vs EI — pronounce the SECOND letter
IE = long "ee" (like "see")  |  EI = "eye" sound (like "mine")
wieWein
Liebeleibt
siebenvssein
🔚
Final Devoicing — voiced consonants go silent at word end
At end of word: b→p, d→t, g→k. Written with voiced consonant, pronounced as voiceless.
